On December 17, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced that it signed a multi-year deal with YouTube, giving the popular streaming company exclusive global rights to the annual Academy Awards (AKA The Oscars) from 2029 through 2033. The deal is momentous not only because it marks the end of the Academy’s five-decade partnership with ABC, but also because it epitomizes the radical transformation that online streaming has triggered in the world of film. The Oscars have long been associated with traditional network television, holding out even as other award shows, such as The Golden Globes and Actors Awards (previously known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards), have shifted to streaming services in recent years.
