There have been several ex-SEC stars to win Super MVP honors throughout history. However, it’s been more than a decade since the last time it happened. Former Ole Miss quarterback Eli Manning is the most recent former SEC player to take home the Super Bowl MVP. He did it twice — in 2008 and 2012. Former Texas A&M star Von Miller also did so at Super Bowl 50, but Miller played his collegiate career in the Big 12.
Prior to Manning, the most recent SEC legend to accomplish the feat was his brother, Peyton Manning. He did so back in 2007 with the Indianapolis Colts. The year prior, former Georgia wide receiver Heinz Ward earned Super Bowl MVP honors while leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to Super Bowl XL.
Running back Terrell Davis (Georgia), running back Emmitt Smith (Florida), safety Jake Scott (Georgia), quarterback Joe Namath (Alabama ) and quarterback Bart Starr (Alabama) are the other former SEC stars who earned the nod during their playing days.
Super Bowl 59 will kick off from New Orleans at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday night.
