The Australian Recording Industry Association have today unveiled the nominations for the 2021 edition of the annual ARIA Awards, with some of the country’s best and brightest receiving multiple nods this year.
With the ARIA Awards set to take place virtually on Wednesday, November 24th, the full list of nominations were revealed via YouTube this morning, with Brooke Boney unveiling the full list of nominees.
Leading the charge this year are Amy Shark and Genesis Owusu, who have both received six nominations. Amy Shark has received nods for Album Of The Year (for April’s Cry Forever), Best Artist, and Best Pop Release, she’s also up for Best Video, Best Australian Live Act, and Song of the Year for “Love Songs Ain’t For Us” in the public voted awards.
Meanwhile, Genesis Owusu’s Smiling with No Teeth has seen him receive nominations for Album Of The Year, Best Artist, Best Hip Hop Release, Best Independent Release, and Best Cover Art, alongside Best Australian Live Act in the public voted awards.
Multiple ARIA nominations can also be found elsewhere in the full list of nominations, including Budjerah, Masked Wolf, Midnight Oil, The Avalanches, Tones And I, and Vance Joy, who all have five, while Ngaiire and The Kid LAROI each have four, and Ball Park Music have received three. A further nine artists have also been nominated twice.
This year’s ARIA Awards are also notable for a couple of other category changes, including the removal of the gendered Best Male and Female Artist Awards, which have been replaced by a single Best Artist award. This year also sees the debut of the newly-renamed Breakthrough Artist ARIA, which is now being handed out in honour of late industry icon Michael Gudinski, who passed away suddenly earlier this year.
“After another immensely challenging year for creatives, it has been truly phenomenal to see such amazing, diverse and celebrated work continue to pour out from all over the country,” said Annabelle Herd, ARIA Chief Executive in a statement. “In the face of such adversity, we can all be proud to say Australia’s creative heart is still alive and beating.”
Further details surrounding the 2021 ARIA Awards – including virtual performers and the ARIA Hall of Fame inductees – are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
