Australian Women in Music Awards and Music Victoria are in the hunt for major honours of their own.
Announced today (Oct. 19), AWMA is one of three finalists in the category for Best Initiative to Support Diversity and Inclusion in Music at 2021 Music Cities Awards, the winner for which will be announced online next month.
AWMA is up against Handiclapped’s Germany-based inclusive events and South Africa’s Kronendal Music Academy, with the winner revealed during a ceremony streamed Nov. 9.
Music Victoria, the independent, not-for-profit organisation and state peak body for contemporary music, is in the running for Best Global Music Office, a category that also includes candidates from Auckland and Tulsa.
All told, ten awards will be handed out at the Music Cities Awards, which acknowledges and rewards the “most outstanding applications of music” for economic, social, environmental and cultural development in spots around the globe.
“When we say we are leading the way in diversity and inclusion, we mean it,” says Vicki Gordon, Founding Executive Producer Australian Women In Music Awards & Conference.
“We are truly honoured to be recognised globally for our hard work.”
Other Australian nominees include Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (Best Use of Music in Towns and Cities), Foundation of the YCK Laneways Precinct (Best Night Time Economy Initiative) and Climate Fridays by Green Music Australia (Best Use of Music to Support Sustainability).
Music Cities Events CEO Luke Jones comments, “It’s truly inspiring to see how people and organisations around the world are using music to improve and develop their towns and cities, or to create more value for their organisations.”
The 2022 edition of AWMA will be held again in Brisbane, on May 17 and 18 May, with support from Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.
As previously announced, Tina Arena will deliver the keynote address at the AWMA conference, and, for the first time, the pop legend lends her name to an award.
The inaugural Tina Arena Award Special Impact Award will be bequeathed to an “unsung champion” of the music industry, organisers say.
