The State of the Race

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie is the one acting Emmy race where Apple TV+ crime drama “Black Bird” has a leg up on the blockbuster success that is Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Sure, the latter has Richard Jenkins giving a respectable performance as the serial killer’s dad, but that is going to be put in direct comparison with one of Ray Liotta’s last roles as protagonist Jimmy Keene’s dad on the Dennis Lehane-helmed show, a performance that has gained even more resonance after the beloved actor’s untimely death last year.

But Liotta is not even the actor who has already won awards for his performance in “Black Bird.” Paul Walter Hauser already has a Golden Globe to his name for playing the terrifying Larry Hall on the series. His acclaimed performance even boosts co-star Greg Kinear’s Emmy chances, as they have some stirring interrogation scenes opposite each other.

The whole serial killer craze within the limited series race this year extends to Domhnall Gleeson as well, with his unnerving, murderous role in “The Patient,” which he received a couple of winter TV award nominations for. But the categories for a supporting performance in a limited series usually come from a smaller pool of shows, so “The Patient” being less of a Series category contender is a downside for Gleeson, and an upside for an actor like “Beef” star Young Mazino, whose show is a bigger Emmys contender. “Love and Death” also has a good shot here because it has even more lauded supporting performances from stars like Jesse Plemons and Tom Pelphrey, who have both been nominated for a Primetime Emmy before.

Predicted Nominees:
Domhnall Gleeson, “The Patient” (FX)
Paul Walter Hauser, “Black Bird” (Apple TV+)
Richard Jenkins, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (Netflix)
Greg Kinnear, “Black Bird” (Apple TV+)
