"A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on Dances With Wolves," the Yellowstone star began.

"I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an @theacademy Awards nomination.

"And I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words."

Costner wrote the he is "grateful" to have been able to witness Greene at work and be a part of Dances with Wolves, which saw the late actor receive an Academy Award for his performance.

"Rest in peace, Graham," Costner concluded.

Greene was born in 1952 in Ohsweken, on the Six Nations Reserve, in Ontario, Canada, only pursuing acting after a friend convinced him to read a script whilst he was working as a recording engineer.

The actor spoke on his career in a 2024 interview with Canada's Theatre Museum, explaining that when he first started in the industry, native characters were all expected to fit into this stoic stereotype created by Hollywood.

"When I first started out in the business, it was a very strange thing where they'd hand you the script where you had to speak the way they thought native people spoke," he said at the time.

"And in order to get my foot in the door a little further, I did it. I went along with it for a while, you gotta look stoic, don't smile…you gotta grunt a lot.

"I don't know anybody who behaves like that. Native people have an incredible sense of humour.

"And that's what I said to Kevin [Costner]... I said the people in this film [Dances with Wolves], in this village, they have an incredible family, incredible relationship and fun has always been part of that.

"Fun is 50 per cent of how they live and enjoy things. Family is family, no matter what."
