Patrick Mahomes’ Disastrous Season has a Surprising Hall of Fame Silver Lining That Should Scare the Rest of the NFL

The Kansas City Chiefs have made it to back-to-back Super Bowls. Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes has worked wonders in his few years in the NFL and is entrenched in the GOAT debates.

However, the 2021 campaign has not been a good one for Mahomes and the defending AFC Champions. They have crawled out to a 4-4 start to the year, and Mahomes has struggled more than he ever has since entering the NFL.

His turnover numbers are mind-boggling. He leads the NFL in interceptions. Yes, really.

But, amid disappointment comes a Hall of Fame-sized cloud that Mahomes falls under, and it just shows that this isn’t the first time this has occurred.

Patrick Mahomes is having a brutal season

First and foremost, it isn’t all Mahomes fault. However, this team lives and dies through its superstar quarterback.

The defense is a whole other issue, but Mahomes is not doing any favors with the number of interceptions he throws. He has thrown for 2368 yards on the season with 19 scores and 10 picks through the first chunk of the year.

He is third in the NFL in passing yards and fourth in passing scores, but the turnovers are the primary issue that the Chiefs need to find a way to fix.

No matter how much changes around the Chiefs, it won’t be easy to overcome if Mahomes keeps turning the ball over at such a high clip.

There is a surprising silver lining with Mahomes’ struggles

Mahomes isn’t the first All-Pro quarterback to lead the NFL in interceptions. That list above is star-studded.

Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Brett Favre, Johnny Unitas, Terry Bradshaw, and Jim Kelly. That is quite the list to be on — even if it is for a not-so-good reason. Every single name on that list has a shrine in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, except for Drew Brees — and his shrine will be up soon.

So yes, Mahomes is throwing interceptions at a staggering rate. On the other hand, this isn’t unordinary.

Quarterbacks struggle, and it doesn’t help that the Chiefs defense isn’t holding its end of the bargain. The defensive issues put even more pressure on Mahomes to deliver. The injury to Clyde Edwards-Helaire caused the running back position to take a massive hit.

The talent for No. 15 is still there and won’t ever leave. Things should turn around, and when they do, watch out.

Perfect opportunity for the Chiefs to bounce back

Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers had been circled as a huge matchup. Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce. Andy Reid vs. Matt LaFleur in a possible Super Bowl preview.

But Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19 and is out for Sunday, prompting Jordan Love to make his first career start. With Rodgers, the Packers were favored, but without the NFL MVP, the odds have tilted toward the Chiefs.

Despite Mahomes being in the midst of an uncharacteristic struggle, this is a golden opportunity for him to bounce back and get himself and the team on course again.

Right now, he is struggling, but once he gets back on track, the NFL better watch out for the unstoppable force we have been used to seeing.
