Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova
At this weekend’s Welsh Championships, beginning tomorrow in Cardiff, we’ll see many of the country’s top competing athletes as well as a number of guests from outside of Wales, which this year could include Olympic medalists Jessica Gadirova and Jennifer Gadirova, both of whom are on the roster following a return from injuries after missing out on the 2024 Olympic Games.
The English twins are listed to represent their club, Aylesbury, alongside their club teammates Nikol Stoimenova, who competes internationally for Bulgaria, and Swiss athlete Lilli Habisreutinger. 2024 Olympian Alice Kinsella is also expected to compete in the guest category, as is Alia Leat, once a junior standout who competed at the junior world championships in 2019 but hasn’t competed in over two years.
Most notably on the roster for the national competition is Ruby Evans, the first gymnast from Wales to compete on a British Olympic team since 1996 when she made it to Paris last summer and the reigning Welsh national champion. Evans is one of 13 gymnasts named to the longlist for next year’s Commonwealth Games, a list that features many of the Welsh gymnasts we’ll see this weekend, including established seniors Abigail Roper, Emily Roper, Mali Morgan, and Mia Perryment, first-year seniors Ellie Lewis, Jemima Taylor, Frances Stone, and Ffion Burgum, and current junior Lexi Holmes.
On the men’s side, 2024 Welsh champion Joe Cemlyn-Jones headlines the field, and we’ll also see some top-level guest competitors in the senior ranks, such as reigning Scottish champion Cameron Lynn, and English standouts Joshua Nathan, Courtney Tulloch, Reuben Ward, and Adam Tobin, to name a few.
