Former Super Bowl Champion Blasts Patrick Mahomes After Chiefs QB Continues Failing to Reach Former MVP Levels: ‘Patrick Mahomes is Broken’

The Kansas City Chiefs inched their way to a second straight win after edging past the Aaron Rodgers-less Green Bay Packers in Week 9 action. However, it came with star quarterback Patrick Mahomes struggling to find consistency. It led former Super bowl champion Ryan Clark to deliver stern remarks toward the Chiefs star quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes leads Chiefs narrowly past the Aaron Rodgers-less Packers

The Chiefs grabbed their second straight win by marginally moving past the Packers without Aaron Rodgers.

Mahomes struggled to pass the ball again, completing 20-of-37 passes for 166 yards with a touchdown while holding a 74.8 passer rating. The star quarterback averaged just 4.5 yards per pass attempt due to difficulty moving the ball down the field.

According to ESPN’s Stats & Info, he averaged only 3.2 air yards in his 20 completed passes against the Packers, marking the second-lowest in a game he played. The lowest occurred happened last week in the 20-17 win over the New York Giants.

The Chiefs are racking wins, but how they are occurring is drawing much concern. Kansas City narrowly pushed past the Giants and struggled to comfortable push past a Rodgers-less Packers team. All that led to strong remarks from a former Super Bowl champion directed toward Mahomes.

Former Super Bowl champion blasts Patrick Mahomes after Chiefs QB continues failing to reach former MVP levels: ‘Patrick Mahomes is broken’

The Chiefs have earned three wins in their last four contests, but the team isn’t moving the needle with their play.

Mahomes isn’t showing the flashy performance that made him one of the league’s best players. He recorded less than 6.0 yards per pass attempt in four out of the last five contests while throwing six interceptions.

Former NFL star defensive back Ryan Clark, who won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers, laid into Mahomes on ESPN’s Get Up stating that the 26-year-old hasn’t changed his game.

“Patrick Mahomes is broken,” Clark exclaimed. “And he’s broken because he is the same that he’s always been, but that’s no longer good enough. It’s time for Patrick Mahomes to pivot. It’s time for Patrick Mahomes to play football in a different way, but sometimes when you have been so successful doing things one way it’s hard to do another.

“They are asking the Kansas City Chiefs offense to do this. They are saying to become a running football team and be committed to that. They are saying take the check-downs and be committed to that. They are saying, ‘You will not have the big play against us, so we will make you earn every blade of grass and we believe you will make a mistake.’ That’s what’s been happening. It’s a boring offense that refuses to be boring to win football games.”

Mahomes remains one of the league’s best talents. However, Clark’s vantage point sees him trying to do what used to work. Meanwhile, the rest of the NFL has adjusted to force him into playing a certain way he’s not comfortable.

He’s amid a challenging phase where he must work to alter his game to get the Chiefs back on track. In other words, the former league MVP needs to adjust, or the concerning downward trend will continue.

Chiefs need their star quarterback to turn it around

If the Chiefs hope to earn recognition again as a Super Bowl contender, Mahomes must find his way.

He’s the linchpin to Kansas City’s success, as his play will dictate their fate. The team certainly needs dependable play from their defense, but it’s the star quarterback that will take them as far they hope.

Kansas City still holds the second half of the season ahead to figure it out, but the clock is ticking.
