Sycco Doubles up at 2022 Queensland Music Awards

Sycco Doubles up at 2022 Queensland Music Awards

With two wins, including the coveted song of the year, Sycco was the big winner Tuesday night (March 29) at the 2022 Queensland Music Awards in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

The singer and songwriter stamped her class on the 2022 ceremony, where her Future Classic single ‘My Ways’ won the pop award and final category of the night, song of the year.

The Brisbane youngster (real name Sasha McLeod) now has the unusual distinction of winning those same two honours in consecutive years.

The last act to win the pop award and song of the year on the same evening was Amy Shark back in 2017.

Homegrown heavyweights The Jungle Giants took out the album award for Love Signs; Asha Jefferies was the folk winner for ‘Crybaby’ and Casey Barnes earned the country trophy for ‘God Took His Time On You’.

iiiConic snagged the hip-hop award for ‘Okay,’ and charmed the audience with a speech in which he pointed out to those who didn’t feel loved, that he “loves everyone”.

Waax took the rock award for ‘Most Hated Girl’, an unexpected victory that had lead singer Marie ‘Maz’ DeVita show the type of enthusiasm rarely seen outside of a grand final win.

“We’ve been doing this for nearly 10 fucking years,” she declared. “But it’s really nice to be recognised as rock dogs.”

Industrial artist Zheani announced herself to the music industry by winning heavy and emerging artist of the year awards, promptly pointing out she’s here to “represent the freaks.” The central Queensland-raised performer then gave the audience more than they bargained for when, as she left the podium, she lifted her dress for the night’s cheekiest moment.

The soundbite of the night belonged to contemporary classical winner Corrina Bonshek (for ‘Dreams Of the Earth’), who pointed out that “most composers are usually men, they’re usually dead, so winning this award is special.”

The Queensland Music Awards are now in its 16th year. Organized by QMusic, the 2022 edition was held at Fortitude Music Hall, with guests in the house including Go-Betweens drummer Lindy Morrison, who presented three awards; Thelma Plum; Sarah McLeod; Harvey Lister, Chairman and CEO of ASM Global’s Asia Pacific Division; and Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch MP.
