She-Hulk is Officially Stronger AND Smarter Than Bruce Banner

She-Hulk is Officially Stronger AND Smarter Than Bruce Banner

Spoilers for Avengers 46 ahead!

Throughout Jason Aaron’s run on Avengers, She-Hulk has been struggling to control her darker impulses, and in issue #46, readers see her coping strategies, and they prove she is smarter and stronger than Bruce Banner. And that's a good thing as She-Hulk will need those qualities as the fearsome Winter Guard invades Avengers Mountain looking for trouble. The issue is on sale now in print and digital.

She-Hulk first appeared in 1980 in the first issue of her self-titled book and was created by Stan Lee and John Buscema. Introduced as Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters, she would receive a blood transfusion from Bruce that irradiated her blood and turned her into a gamma mutate. Unlike her cousin, She-Hulk has been able, for the most part, to control her transformations. She has managed to successfully balance super-heroics with a career as an attorney. She-Hulk’s adventures have been usually light-hearted in nature, but that has changed recently. She has struggled with controlling her Hulk persona and was even killed. She would return to life, thanks to the Leader, who has mastered the Green Door, which enables gamma mutates to return to life. And now she has been abducted and is being reprogrammed to be a killing machine.

The issue opens with She-Hulk already in captivity and through flashbacks, readers learn that she has been abducted by Russia’s Winter Guard, who plans to turn her into a weapon. Prior to the Guard’s arrival, She-Hulk was working out in Avengers Mountain; Captain Marvel tries to talk to her, and the best She-Hulk can do are grunts and simple words. However, in her mind, she is running a mantra of sorts through her head: she is reviewing old court cases and is using highly specialized legal speak as she does. She-Hulk is doing this to keep her mind sharp and active, and as a way to keep mental control. It is all for naught, as she finds herself in the infamous Red Room after her abduction. As she struggles against her restraints, her skin turns red.

The issue ends, and readers must wait until next month to find out if She-Hulk escapes the Winter Guard’s clutches, but given the story arc is titled “World War She-Hulk,” readers can expect She-Hulk to do some serious damage. Losing control is one of her greatest fears, and the mantra she has developed works—up until a point, but in the face of the trauma the Winter Guard inflicted on her, it failed, and her worst nightmare came to pass. Regardless of its long-term effectiveness, the mantra is something Bruce has not come up with yet, and it shows how She-Hulk is smarter than her cousin.

She-Hulk is stuck in a living nightmare, one that will get worse before it gets better, but she has developed ways of keeping control, and they prove her to be smarter than her cousin. Avengers #46 is written by Jason Aaron, with art by Javier Garron, colors by David Curiel, and letters by Cory Petit.
