The 64th Annual Grammy Awards are tonight, and a number of country music artists are set to perform including Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton and Billy String.
Carrie Underwood, a seven-time Grammy winner, is up for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “If I Didn’t Love You” with Jason Aldean, as well as Best Roots Gospel Album for her 2021 record My Savior, while Chris Stapleton is up for three Grammys himself.
Sturgill Simpson picked up two nominations for his new album Dood and Juanita AND Cuttin’ Grass Vol. 1 (Butcher Shoppe Sessions), and Tyler Childers and Billy Strings both secured noms, as well, in addition to The Marfa Tapes trio for Best Country Album.
But with that being said, let’s take a look back at some great country music moments from Grammys past.
And we’re taking it back to the great Johnny Cash and his iconic song, “Folsom Prison Blues.”
First recorded in 1955 for his debut studio album, his live version from his iconic At Folsom Prison album won the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance at the 11th Annual Grammy Awards in 1969.
In 1990, at the 32nd Annual Grammy Awards, Johnny Cash took the stage for a performance of “Folsom Prison Blues.”
The 2022 Grammy Awards Rescheduled
Originally, set for January 31st, it was scheduled to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles (as of right now, I refuse to call it Crypto.com Arena), however has since been moved to Sin City.
However, with the packed schedule of The Staples Center in the coming months, it would’ve been impossible
The Grammys will now air live from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 3rd.
CBS and the Recording Academy released a joint statement, opting to postpone the ceremony due to COVID-19:
“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, the Recording Academy and CBS have postponed the 64th Annual Grammy Awards Show.
The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority. Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31 simply contains too many risks.
We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon.”
Rumors began circulating in December that postponing the Grammys was being taken into consideration. Last year’s show was one of the first award shows after the long 2020 hiatus due to the surge of COVID-19.
Trevor Noah, who hosted the awards in 2021 was set to host this year again.
