The recent announcement that the Academy Awards will begin airing its annual ceremony on YouTube starting in 2019 should evoke a collective sigh from Americans who are worn out by logging into streaming services and watching their cherished institutions being watered down due to corporate greed. However, the Oscars' jump from a traditional television broadcast on ABC to the Internet is actually the best avenue for the awards body to adapt to the times and evolve into the future. Now that the ceremony can expand its runtime, revive old categories that have been excised from the telecast, and celebrate the magic of the movies in the grandest form, the Academy is appealing to its core die-hard base, because that's the only audience that matters at this point.
