Paramount+’s Sci-Fi Problem Just Got Worse After Canceling Its Most Important New Series

Paramount+ hit Star Trek fans with a major shock when it announced that the sophomore season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academywill be its last. While the cancellation is due to Starfleet Academy not meeting Paramount's desired ratings, rather than the intense vitriol the series received since its premiere, it is still a major blow to the Star Trek franchise and to Paramount+. Paramount+ was always considered to be the weakest player in the "streaming wars", and Star Trek served as one of the major franchises that gave it a leg up. Starfleet Academy's cancellation, combined with hitmaker Taylor Sheridan's departure from Paramount for Universal, has effectively cut that metaphorical leg off.
