Like the audiences, The Academy seemed less enthusiastic about James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ashthan it was with either of its predecessors. The movie earned just two nominations at the upcoming Oscars, while Ryan Coogler's Sinners led the field with a record-breaking 16 nods. However, Cameron one-upped Coogler at the box office this weekend, as Avatar 3 overtook Black Panther. Released in 2018, Black Panther was the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to earn a Best Picture nod at the Oscars, and is generally considered one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. It cemented Coogler as one of the brightest talents of his generation, and exceeded all expectations at the box office.
