‘Fortnite’ Creators Hit With Unfair Labor Practice Charge for AI-Recreated Darth Vader Voice

SAG-AFTRA is cracking down on Fortnite after its recent introduction of an AI Darth Vader. The union, which represents roughly 170,000 voice, motion, and screen performers and other media professionals worldwide, has filed an unfair labor complaint against Llama Productions, a subsidiary of Epic Games that works on the wildly popular multiplayer game, for its use of AI to recreate James Earl Jones's iconic voice for a bot that responds in-character to what players do or say. The complaint alleges that the implementation of the technology infringes on the union's right to negotiate significant changes to its agreement surrounding the use of members' voices. Concerns were also laid out about the bot in the shadow of greater conversations about the use of AI in entertainment, as the union continues to fight to safeguard actors from advancements in technology.
