The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.
Yes, the 38th edition of the awards put on by Film Independent have made a change previously adopted by the Gotham Awards: to have gender-neutral performance categories. That means Cate Blanchett was not just competing against Michelle Yeoh for Best Lead Performance (who ultimately won), but also Paul Mescal from “Aftersun” (though, along with Jeremy Pope in ‘The Inspection” he’s one of only two men in the category).
The honors for “Everything Everywhere” beyond Best Feature, Best Lead Performance, and Best Supporting Performance also included Best Director (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert), Best Breakthrough Performance (Stephanie Hsu), Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.
The only films to win awards were those that were not going up against “Everything Everywhere”: “TÁR” for Best Cinematography, “Aftersun” for Best First Feature, “Emily the Criminal” for Best First Screenplay, “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” for Best Documentary, “Nanny” (or really, Nikyatu Jusu) for the Someone to Watch Award, “Women Talking” for the previously announced Robert Altman Award, “Joyland” for Best International Feature, “I Didn’t See You There” for the Truer Than Fiction Award, and “The Cathedral” for the John Cassavetes Award.
Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri won the Lead Performance and Supporting Performance awards for TV, respectively. “The Rehearsal” won Best New Non-Scripted or Documentary Series and “The Bear” won Best New Scripted Series.
Another big change concerns how to watch the Spirit Awards: the ceremony did not air on IFC but on YouTube.
