While there have been more World War II movies that have won Best Picture (including Schindler’s List, Casablanca, and arguably Oppenheimer, though none of those really show combat sequences the way you'd expect most war movies to), there have still been a decent number of World War I movies that have won Best Picture at the Oscars. A fair few movies about the Vietnam War have also won, but for a while, World War I was the most noteworthy conflict of the 20th century by far. So, perhaps fittingly, most of the World War I movies that won Best Picture were released in the years before World War II began, and then after that conflict ended, World War I films stopped getting made quite as often. There’s still one noteworthy and groundbreaking winner, concerned with World War I, that was made almost two decades after World War II ended, but the other three were all made between 1927 and 1933. So, if you were following the Academy Awards during those first few years that the annual event existed, you could pretty much expect a World War I movie to win Best Picture every few years.
