When it comes to the Academy Awards, people obviously compare the movies that are within certain categories to the other movies in those same categories, for obvious reasons. It’s like, “Who’s going to win,” you know, “between Leonardo DiCaprio or Timothée Chalamet?” Turns out, neither. But people were naturally comparing those two performances because both DiCaprio and Chalamet were nominated in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for the most recent Academy Awards; namely, the 98th ones. The show that celebrated the movies that came out in 2025, but that you'll sometimes see called the 2026 Academy Awards. This is something we have to contend with. This is a continual source of mild confusion, and it gets worse if you want to talk about movies that weren’t given a wide release until y year, so they competed in z year, even though they premiered in x year (hello, Casablanca, you 1942 premiere, 1943 wide release, and 1944 Academy Awards competitor).
