There are so many sports movies out there, and you can go back to the silent era to find early examples of films about sports, showing how popular they’ve always been. Watching a sport can be engaging enough, especially if you're a fan of one of the sides competing, but cinema allows an opportunity to make an already dramatic event more dramatic. Cinema can also make the sport being tackled look grander and more intense, thanks to inventive camerawork. Films like The Hustler and Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India even manage to make smaller-scale (like pool, in The Hustler) or slower-paced (like cricket, in Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India) look more engrossing than you might otherwise expect they could look. And sports movies often work because they stick to a formula, but that’s okay, in a way, because sports themselves have rules that make a game – or event – play out in a way that could arguably be “formulaic” itself. But some athletes and competitors think outside the box, and so do some sports movies.
