
For much of its life, the Academy Awards have been a fixture on ABC, starting with the network gaining the broadcast rights in 1960. However, all of that may soon change thanks to the ever-shifting landscape of television. In recent years, streaming services and other networks have expressed interest in adding film's biggest night to their catalog of live events. Yet, according to a new report from Bloomberg, a surprising new contender has emerged from the woodwork to make a play — YouTube. The Google-owned video-sharing platform has inquired about purchasing the rights to the Oscars, a landscape-shifting move that would send a bold message to the industry and, potentially, generate plenty of new buzz for the ceremony.
