The SAG nominations were announced today, and I’d say there were some surprises. Most notably, no nominations for Sentimental Value. However, Focus Features did quite well with nominations for Jessie Buckley, Emma Stone, and Kate Hudson, all in the lead. That’s fairly astonishing to dominate a category like that.
Apparently, it’s a record matched only by Netflix in 2020 as the only two studios in the past decade to land three nominations in Best Actress.
I was surprised that Bugonia didn’t make it into Ensemble. I thought by the end that it would. Kate Hudson is quietly picking up buzz around town. People are talking about her performance. Is it enough to push it through in a competitive category?
I figured Netflix couldn’t miss, but I was surprised that Frankenstein made the cut. That’s a case of the voters just really liking the movie. So Frankenstein is STRONG heading into this race as well; it should be. It’s quite the masterpiece.
Miles Caton, in Supporting Actor, along with Wunmi Musaku, is fantastic news for Sinners, catching the wind at their backs. Fingers crossed the movie lands with Oscar voters.
It’s not that surprising that One Battle After Another did so well, considering the actors have long appreciated Paul Thomas Anderson as a director who centers actors and many of his films from the old days have landed in ensemble, like Boogie Nights and Magnolia. The film didn’t miss a nomination anywhere and even landed in stunts.
I think Sinners has this in the ensemble category with ease but I guess we’ll have to wait and see. One Battle will either dominate the guilds or it won’t. We don’t know yet if it’s a total sweep, like Argo did in 2012, or if it’s a partial sweep (one movie wins the Globes, a different movie dominates the guilds). Right now, it looks to me like a total sweep but we’ll see.
Scott Kernen asked me if SAG ensemble and DGA have ever matched. Only once. In 2004 but that was when the SAG had six slots.

And of course, that was when the Oscars had only five (which they should go back to by now). These five movies were locked throughout the season, even if some of us thought The Aviator might win, or even Sideways.
These movies in ensemble feel locked:
One Battle After Another
Sinners
Hamnet
Marty Supreme
Frankenstein
So, are these the five for Best Director at the DGA? Most people probably have them predicted. I think if there is anyone who can bust through this five it would be either Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value or Yorgos Lanthimos for Bugonia. But as it looks right now, we might see SAG/DGA history made tomorrow with a 5/5 lock.
Here are your charts.
