The State of the Race

Ultimately, as controversial as the show has been, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” star Evan Peters has far and away been the frontrunner for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie. He seems like a safe bet to win because Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series was massively popular, and awarding Peters, who received an Emmy for his supporting role in “Mare of Easttown,” could be seen more as an endorsement of his committed performance more than the show altogether.

Also, most of the contenders in this category are shows that went through the winter awards season as well, so Peters already beat “Black Bird” star Egerton at the Golden Globes this year. However, both weirdly lost to “1883” star Sam Elliott at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (the actor was not even nominated for an Emmy when he was eligible last season), and neither was nominated for a Critics Choice Award this year, with “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” star Daniel Radcliffe instead winning that award over a bunch of Emmy contenders from last year. That certainly bodes well for the TV movie star’s chances at a nod.

“Beef” star Steven Yeun is the only newcomer that really seems like a lock in this category, with his Netflix show making waves in April. Though Steve Carell received some awards nods for his performance in FX on Hulu’s “The Patient,” there has not been a lot of campaigning for that show, so it seems more likely that the work the teams behind “Fleishman Is in Trouble” and “George and Tammy” will elevate respective stars Jesse Eisenberg and Michael Shannon past him when it comes time for voters to make their final decisions on nominations.

Predicted Nominees:
Taron Egerton, “Black Bird” (Apple TV+)
Jesse Eisenberg, “Fleishman Is in Trouble” (FX)
Evan Peters, “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” (Netflix)
Daniel Radcliffe, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” (Roku Channel)
Michael Shannon, “George and Tammy” (Showtime)
Steven Yeun, “Beef” (Netflix)

Contenders:
