With one role, Scottish actor Sam Heughan went from little-known actor to global heartthrob

Sam Heughan was relatively unknown until one acting role launched him to international stardom and into the hearts of many adoring fans.

The Scottish actor, 45, landed his role as the charming and devoted Jamie Fraser in the Starz drama series Outlander in 2013 and in the 11 years since, his role in the historical fantasy drama has garnered a passionate fan base.

Before Outlander, the TV adaptation of the historical fantasy book series by Diana Gabaldon, Heughan cut his teeth as an actor on the stage and has starred in several film and TV roles throughout his career including alongside Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon in The Spy Who Dumped Me.

Of all his roles, it seems almost fated the fantasy drama would become one of his most celebrated, considering his parents named him and his brother after characters from another fantasy world – The Lord of the Rings

An 'imaginitive' upbringing

In a 2021 interview with Kelly Clarkson, Heughan said his parents were "hippies" and big fans of the J.R.R. Tolkien books, leading his parents to name him after the series' well-known Samwise and his older brother after Cirdan the Shipwright

The two brothers grew up in the Scottish countryside in the small hillside village of Balmaclellan, Dumfries and Galloway. It was this quiet, rural upbringing that he says helped foster his imagination leading to his career on the stage and screen.

"I think being brought up in rural Scotland, there were four people in my class at school and I would say I was perhaps a bit of a loner in some ways - maybe just because you spend a lot of time on your own," Heughan told BBC Radio in 2023.

"I was very fortunate to play in the forests or the grounds of an old castle where we were brought up and raised and I think that being alone and using your imagination really sparked something inside me.

"I think it perhaps also gives you the drive as well."

Heughan and his family moved around Scotland a few times throughout his childhood. Then after high school, he went on to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) where life as an actor truly kicked off.

From the stage to the screen

Sam Heughan attends the 2010 British Soap Awards held at the London Television Centre on May 8, 2010 in London, England.

During his studies, Heughan appeared in several theatre productions and was known for many successful theatre roles in his early career, including several Shakespeare productions and his role in the play Outlying Islands, which earned him a nomination for a Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer.

At the time, he also began to take on several screen roles – his first a role in the WWII drama Island at War.

In the early days of his career, he also starred in the Scottish soap River City, the British mystery series Midsomer Murders and the political drama Party Animals. In 2011, he starred as Prince Asthon in the Hallmark film A Princess for Christmas alongside Roger Moore.

Though Outlander has taken up much of his attention over the past decade, Heughan also lent his skills to other projects in that time including the 2023 romantic comedy Love Again and the 2018 comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me alongside Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon.

He's also led the highly successful travel documentary Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip With Sam and Graham alongside Outlander co-star Graham McTavish.

How Sam became Jamie

It was 2013 when Heughan was cast in what would become one of his defining roles as Outlander's Jamie Fraser. He was the first cast member to be announced with great excitement from the series' author Gabaldon.

"That man is a Scot to the bone and Jamie Fraser to the heart," she said of his casting.

"Having seen Sam Heughan not just act, but be Jamie, I feel immensely grateful to the production team for their painstaking attention to the soul of the story and characters."

Since then, Heughan has starred in seven seasons of the beloved show and is now gearing up for the release of the eighth and final season.

Heughan, who recently visited Australia for the Supanova comicon, caught up with David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys of Today Extra ahead of the much-anticipated season finale, expected to be released sometime in late 2025 or early 2026.

"It's been such an amazing journey, 11 years, eight seasons, 101 episodes. He's such an amazing character," Heughan sai as he reflected on wrapping up the show.

For Heughan it's not just saying goodbye to the cast and crew that's been tough, but also the fans.

"But let's not get too worked up about it, there's still one more season to go and there's so much to look forward to."

Life post-Outlander

While Heughan is sad to be parting with his role in Outlander, there's no doubt his adoring fans are just as sad, if not moreso.

But while he may be stepping away from Fraser, he has plenty in the works, including another iconic Scottish role.

Heughan will soon be returning to the stage and making his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in the role of Macbeth – a role Heughan tells Today is a "pinnacle" of his career.

"It's amazing to go back [to theatre]. I haven't been on stage for 15 years so for me this really is a kind of coming home. I've always loved Macbeth, it's my favourite Shakespeare play."

Off-screen love

While his glittery career has captured the attention of many, Heughan has kept his personal life relatively private.

It is believed the is currently single, although he has remained tight-lipped about his romantic relationships.

In a 2022 interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Heughan quickly addressed the speculation over his relationship status revealing that his career is his priority.

"My whole career, not just Outlander, but as an actor, I have always put that first," he said.

"It's hard when you travel a lot. My priority has been my career, so that's where I am at the moment. But I am sure at some point, I will get knocked off my feet, then I'm screwed".

Outlander fans did raise eyebrows about a potential romance between Heughan and his co-star Caitriona Balfe, with whom he has noticeable onscreen chemistry but they remain they are just friends.

"We're really good friends. We're both going through the same experience, so that's great, we both really understand that," Caitriona told People when the series first premiered.

Last May, Heughan told People he was "still looking" for love, but was later spotted that same month holding hands with an unknown woman as they walked through the streets of Soho, London.

Given Heughan's notorious privacy we likely won't hear about their connection any time soon.

The actor has also been linked to Australian model Monika Clarke, actress Amy Shiels and singer Mackenzie Mauzy.
