Will won for his role playing Richard Williams in King Richard, the story of Venus and Serena Williams‘ upbringing with their father.
While speaking, Will Smith called Richard Williams a “protector of his family.”
“I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people, and to be a river to my people…you’ve got to be able to take abuse, you’ve got to smile and pretend like that’s okay,” he emotionally said.
He mentioned what Denzel Washington said to him after hitting Chris Rock: “At your highest, that’s when the devil comes for you.”
He also apologized to the Academy, and to his fellow nominees.
“Love will make you do crazy things,” he said before ending with: “I hope the Academy invites me back.”
