Why this year's Oscars red carpet is champagne, not red, for the first time in 62 years

The world's biggest stars are arriving at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre for the 2023 Oscars, but they won't be walking a red carpet.

For the 95th Academy Awards, the iconic ruby rug is champagne-coloured, marking the first time since 1961 that the carpet isn't a shade of red.

Naturally, the move is dividing opinion, and Jamie Lee Curtis had an observation to make?

The colour was reportedly chosen by the Oscars production team, with organisers saying they wanted the rug to be "mellow, like a beach at sunset", per the New York Times.

According to The Cut, creative consultants Lisa Love and Raúl Àvila also hoped the new shade would make for a more seamless transition from daytime carpet arrivals to an evening event.

Additionally, they wanted a "soothing" colour that wouldn't clash with the orange tent placed over the carpet to shield stars from the sun and potential rain.

"The sienna-color tent and champagne-colored carpet was inspired by watching the sunset on a white-sand beach at the 'golden hour' with a glass of champagne in hand, evoking calm and peacefulness," Love told the New York Times.

However, Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel has a different take on why the colour of the famous carpet has changed for the first time in 62 years.

As the carpet was unveiled on Wednesday, the comedian joked about the move by making reference to another change at this year's gala – there's a "crisis team".

"People have been asking, 'Is there going to be any trouble this year? Is there going to be any violence this year?' And we certainly hope not," Kimmel said as it was rolled out on Wednesday.

"But if there is, I think the decision to go with a champagne carpet rather than a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be shed."

Of course, he's talking about that infamous moment between Chris Rock and Will Smith at last year's gala.

We hopefully won't be seeing any bloodshed, but mud could potentially soil the shots – it's currently cloudy in Los Angeles, and there is a chance of rain.

Evidently, chocolate brown was another colour under consideration, which might have been more weather-appropriate.
