Why Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger once 'truly loathed each other'

Hollywood heavyweights Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger were bitter rivals before ultimately building a strong friendship.

Before working together on movies like The Expendables franchise in the 2010s and carving pumpkins together this past Halloween, Stallone, 76, and Schwarzenegger, 75, famously did not get along.

Stallone explained on The Jonathan Ross Show: "We couldn't stand to be in the same galaxy together for a while. We truly, truly loathed each other."

Stallone went on to assert that the Terminator actor had once baited him to take a role in a dud movie.

"He's quite clever. He goes around town saying, 'I can't wait to do this film…' I go to my agent, 'Get that thing away from him. Get people options on me.'"

The Godfather star ended up taking a leading role in Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot opposite Estelle Getty and regretted it instantly, which was apparently all a part of Schwarzenegger's plan.

The actor elaborated: "I got it and I said, 'What a piece of shit this is.' He goes, 'Ha ha ha!'"

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger reunited to carve pumpkins after starring in 2013 film Escape Plan together.

Schwarzenegger confirmed this. "It's 100 percent true. In those days we did all kinds of crazy things to get ahead in our rivalry," he said.

"Luckily for us and everyone else, today, we root for each other. Thank God, because we sure don't ever need another Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot."

However, according to Stallone, Schwarzenegger would get his own comeuppance when he took on a dismal role in Ivan Reitman's Junior. In the film Schwarzenegger plays a scientist who gets himself pregnant using an experimental drug. Junior has a lowly score of just 22% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stallone jokes: "At least I wasn't pregnant in a film, Arnold. We're even."

Whilst there was a period of back-and-forth between the actors, the two have seemingly put that behind them now.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Stallone said, "It's good to talk to a man who actually has put his money where his mouth is and he's achieved that."

"Then we start goofing around and being crazy – just laughing at the old times.

"I told him, 'We are the last two tyrannosaurs.' We're the last two meat-eaters and there's not much beef left out there. So we better enjoy each other'."
