'The Crown' actor Jonathan Pryce felt compelled to apologise to royal after show aired

If you've ever wondered whether members of the British Royal Family watch The Crown, you now have an answer.

Jonathan Pryce, who played Prince Philip on the Netflix drama, told Times Radio that yes, the royals do watch the show.

And what's more, the 76-year-old actually spoke to a senior member of the family and apologised for his part in it.

"One of our cast met one of the royal family who intimated that they watched it," Pryce said in the interview, according to Deadline.

In 2021, when Pryce was knighted, he went to Windsor for the ceremony.

"It was Princess Anne who dubbed me," he explained. "And I was in the middle of playing her father [in The Crown], and there'd been intimations that she'd seen some of it."

"And so she put the sword lightly on the shoulder, and I stood up and I said – thinking she was thinking, you know – I said, 'Oh, I don't know what to say to you…um…sorry?

"And she said, 'Why? It's done now'."

Though it sounds like an awkward moment, Pryce laughed it off.

"It was quite an amusing moment, for me at least." he said.

He added: "Now, whether she meant I was saying sorry for being here tonight, or sorry for, y'know, 'you've played my father and it's done the way you've done it', it's you know, whatever."

Last month, in an interview with 9Honey, Pryce said that he did have some regrets about the way his portrayal of Prince Philip came across on-screen.

"I don't think I had enough gaffs as a character actually, I could have done with a few more one-liners to expose that side of him," he said.

Pryce admits he was skeptical at first about taking on the role but says he warmed to the idea as he learned about the late Queen's consort by speaking to those who knew him best.

Sir Jonathan Pryce The Crown

"It was interesting because I'd grown up with this very austere figure who rarely said anything and when he did say [something] it was usually putting his foot in his mouth and saying the wrong thing at the wrong time," he said.

"[But] everyone who knew him would say what a wonderful man he was, very gregarious and friendly, and who enjoyed having a laugh."

All six seasons of The Crown are now streaming on Netflix.
