'Sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling': Billy Joel's health update after brain condition diagnosis

Billy Joel says he feels "fine" after being diagnosed with a brain condition earlier this year.

The Piano Man singer was diagnosed normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) and joked that while he is feeling good, his "balance sucks".

Joel, 76, shared the update during a recent episode of Bill Maher's podcast Club Random.

When asked about his health, Joel said it is "being worked on".

"I feel fine. My balance sucks. It's like being on a boat," the American singer-songwriter explained.

Joel said his brain condition used to be called "water on the brain, now it's called hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus."

The cause of the condition is still unknown.

Joel admitted he thought the condition was from drinking, but confirmed he doesn't drink anymore.

"I used to, like a fish," he said.

"I feel good. I think they keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder. So it sounds a lot worse than what I'm feeling."

Billy Joel's new two part documentary

Joel was forced to postpone several concert dates in March due to his medical condition, which required surgery.

Dates in Toronto, Detroit, Syracuse, Salt Lake City, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Charlotte, and Milwaukee were moved to later in 2025.

A statement issued on his behalf read: "[Billy's] upcoming concert dates will be rescheduled due to a medical condition. The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors."

Fans were reassured that Joel was "expected to make a full recovery".

Joel released his own statement, which read: "While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding."

Those shows were later cancelled.
