'She doesn't talk to me any more': Reese Witherspoon was ditched by her famous friend after an award ceremony speech gone wrong

Reese Witherspoon once lost a famous friend after making a clunky faux pas at an awards ceremony and she's still "haunted" by it today.

The Legally Blonde star has recalled a time she had been asked by a friend to give a speech at an award ceremony but got the brief terribly wrong.

"So this friend of mine, who I didn't really know that well but she was a very serious, proper actress, she asked me to give her an award," Witherspoon told People.

"But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her."

Witherspoon explained that she got the tone completely wrong at the event which was "classy" and "elegant" and cracked a joke that didn't land - especially not with her friend.

"I was like, 'Remember the time we got laser hair removal?'" she recalled. "I'm still embarrassed about it."

Witherspoon says the actress who she did not name was not impressed and that saw the end of their friendship.

"We're not friends anymore. I'm not even kidding – we're not friends anymore" she says with a laugh.

"I think she doesn't like me anymore. I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad.

"Yeah. Not even kidding, she doesn't talk to me anymore. Oh well."

Even today, Witherspoon is still reeling from the cringe-worthy moment.

"It literally haunts me," she said.

Witherspoon has presented at several award shows over the years.

Last year she honoured her Big Little Lies co-star Nicole Kidman at the 49th AFI Lifetime Achievement Award Gala in which she jokingly impersonated Kidman's Australian accent.

At the 88th Academy Awards, she presented an overview of the Best Picture nominees alongside Kate Winslet.

But none haunt her quite like this one. 

Witherspoon's recollection of her embarrassing speech came about as her character Margot in her new film You're Cordially Invited gives a similar cringe-worthy speech at her sister's wedding.

In the film, Witherspoon starred alongside fellow actor Will Ferrell.

The duo were spotted together at a recent premiere event and reflected on the devastating LA fires that affected so many - including many in Hollywood.

"We all know a lot of people who have lost everything and you know it's just a process of checking in with everyone, seeing what more can be done," Ferrell said.

Witherspoon added that "it's important" California productions continue to keep businesses "going and thriving" in the wake of the fires.

"We want to make sure people stay employed and having the benefits that they are used to," she said.

"It's a devastating time," she added.
