Selma Blair reveals she has dystonia amid her battle with multiple sclerosis

Selma Blair has revealed she is suffering from an additional condition amid her battle with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Blair, 53, was diagnosed with MS in 2018 and has now shared that she is also dealing with a condition called dystonia.

Dystonia is described as a neurological movement disorder that causes involuntary muscle contractions, repetitive movements, or abnormal postures.

"I have dystonia, which is often misunderstood as difficult or drunk," the Legally Blonde star said during a conversation about accessible travel with Travel + Leisure Editor-in-Chief Jacqui Gifford.

She said the condition can cause "a lot of misunderstanding and a lot of crying at airports".

"People will say, 'I saw you walk up to this gate and now you're acting like you can't talk.' It's like, 'No, this isn't manipulation.' And then as soon as I talk, they ask me, 'Do we need the police?'"

She is often seen using a cane to support her mobility, as well as using a service dog named Scout.

The actress later spoke about her chat for the publication, sharing on Instagram: "I had the pleasure of speaking with @jacquigiff with @travelandleisure at World's Best Summit.


Selma Blair calls MS diagnosis a 'relief'

In her 2021 documentary, Introducing Selma Blair, the actress announced she was in remission from MS after a period of intensive treatment.

Scout joined her at the White House in 2023, where she appeared as part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month in the US.

Blair spoke of her frustration at having experienced "symptoms" of MS since the age of seven, adding that it "took a lifetime of self-advocacy to finally lead me to a diagnosis at age 46, after living most of my life in pain and self-doubt".

Blair told a crowd of advocates attending the ceremony.

Earlier this year, Blair appeared on US TODAY, telling the audience she was "great".

"A few years ago, I didn't think I'd be here. It's been a long time learning to adapt to a new normal.

"I'm doing great."

Blair has one child from a previous relationship with fashion designer Jason Bleick, son Arthur Saint Bleick, 14.

She is currently in a new relationship; however, she is keeping the identity of her beau under wraps.

"It's possible to find love at 52. And beyond!" she told US Weekly in 2024.

"He's not in this business, although he has produced before. I wanted a Midwest man, and I found a real Midwest man."
