Meryl Streep did not attend the 2025 Emmy Awards with Martin Short, but he may have kept in touch with her throughout the night.
Short, 75, sat with his Only Murders in the Building costars Steve Martin and Selena Gomez and Gomez’s fiancé, Benny Blanco, at the awards show, which took place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 14. A video from the night circulating via X seemingly showed Gomez, 33, looking over at Short, who appeared to be looking down at his phone and smiling. Gomez then leaned over to Blanco, 37, to tell him that Short appeared to be texting Streep, 76.

Short attended the event in celebration of Only Murders in the Building, which recently dropped the first few episodes of season 5. The series is up for Outstanding Comedy Series, competing against Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Nobody Wants This, Shrinking, The Studio and What We Do in the Shadows.

Short also received a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of Oliver Putnam, where he’s up against Nobody Wants This’ Adam Brody, The Studio’s Seth Rogen, Shrinking’s Jason Segel and Jeremy Allen White’s The Bear.
Streep and Short — who play love interests on Only Murders in the Building — sparked romance rumors more than one year ago.
A rep for Short, however, denied that the pair were a couple, sharing in a 2024 statement, “They are just very good friends, nothing more.”
In the months that followed, Short shed insight into sharing the screen with Streep on Only Murders in the Building — and called it “one of the great thrills of my life.”
“In fact, the first day of shooting — which was rare because I’m not brand new — I was driving to work and I thought, ‘I’m nervous today. I’m working with Meryl Streep,’” Short said in 2024 at a For Your Consideration event, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Months later, Streep and Short raised eyebrows when they were spotted holding hands at the Only Murders in the Building season 4 premiere. In a clip shared by Deadline at the time, the duo interlaced fingers as they walked together at the Los Angeles party with costar Steve Martin in attendance.
“Steve Martin in this video is the definition of the 3rd wheel 
,” one user commented via X, while another added, “I simply love living in a world where 75 year old Meryl Streep is having a soft relationship launch with her 74 year old boyfriend, Martin Short.”

Streep was married to Don Gummer for 45 years before a rep confirmed their split to Us Weekly in 2023. The exes are parents of son Henry, 45, and daughters Mamie, 42, Grace, 39, and Louisa, 34.
Short, meanwhile, was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until her death from ovarian cancer in 2010. The couple adopted daughter Katherine, 41, and sons Oliver, 39, and Henry, 36, during their relationship.
