Sean Penn Talks Skipping Oscars 2026, Explains Why He’ll Never Attend Another Awards Show

Don’t expect to see Sean Penn at any more awards show.

Earlier this year, the 65-year-old skipped the 2026 Academy Awards, where he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in One Battle After Another.

In a new interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during the 2026 Tribeca Film Festival, Sean opened up about his decision to skip the Oscars and said that he never plans on attending another awards show in the future.

“It’s not just [that it’s] an awards show,” Sean said, per Variety, before going on to share that awards shows represent “social discomfort” for him and “too many people.”

“It would be the same if this group was going to an afterparty and one stepped into that,” he explained. “I’m now down, committed for life, that I won’t go anywhere to be in a designated group beyond eight people.”

Sean added that he feels these events only “give you 15 minutes per person,” which triggers his anxiety and is “dread-provoking.”

“The two times I had gone [to the Oscars], I felt relief that I’d won because so many people out there had worked really hard for that,” he said. “There’s the politics of that stuff.”

Sean previously won Best Actor Oscars for his performances in 2008’s Milk and 2003’s Mystic River.

He also recalled telling his One Battle After Another co-stars that not attending would be “better for my mental health,” and he instead traveled to Ukraine to show his support amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine award.

“I really got to enjoy the Academy Awards for the first time,” Sean said of watching the ceremony from afar. “It was great.”

He also said that he made the decision earlier this year to stop attending awards shows.

“The best that I could ever muster was relief,” Sean said. “Knowing that I wasn’t going to do that anymore, I did one before that this year. I went to the Golden Globes; I’d never been to that before. And that’s where I decided, ‘I can’t do this.'”

In an interview from 2024, Sean revealed which of his past movie roles he couldn’t play today.
