Patti Newton recalls heartwarming conversation with husband Bert Newton before his death: 'Do you think people will remember me?'

Hours after she gave a beautiful tribute to her late husband Bert Newton at the 2022 Logie Awards, Patti Newton continues to share loving words about the beloved TV icon. 

Speaking on Today Extra this morning, Patti shared similar sentiments ask she reflected on her life with the iconic personality, particularly recalling a conversation they had about mortality.

"Not too long before he passed, he did say to me, you know, 'Do you think people will remember me?'" Patti recounted to hosts David Campbell and Belinda Russell.

"I said, 'I think they will remember you so well. It doesn't matter if they don't. Because we will think of you every day.'I was just thrilled that everybody stood up and everybody was... I felt they were with me all the way."

Last night at the Logie Awards ceremony held at The Star Gold Coast, Bert's peers certainly remembered him and his legacy. The iconic host will even live on in future Logies ceremonies with the newly-renamed Bert Newton Award for the Most Popular Presenter, which Patti announced.

As she addressed the crowd, a tear-jerking video montage of Bert played on the screen behind her. 

"I actually didn't think I was going to be able to do this tonight, because it is still very raw and I will never get over him not being here," she told the audience. "But I know he is with me. And here... he is inside me."

The widow took the chance to reflect on her late husband's "bravery" and the great experiences he had over his career.

"He had this thing where he would say, 'Not everybody lives their dream,' but he did, and he loved it, he really did live his dream. But the one thing he really loved was this show, the Logies. This was his baby."

But another important facet of his life was his marriage to Patti, which she reflected on in her speech. 

"I have been his partner for 57 years, it is a long time," she said. "He did say to me when we got married, 'Look, you know, we'll have a few ups and downs, but it'll never be boring.' And he was so right, it was never boring."
