It has been 20 years since Halle Berry became the first black woman to win the Best Actress award at the Oscars and every winner since then has been a white woman.
Black women have not been given many chances to win in those two decades as only six black women have even been nominated in that time frame for a collective seven Best Actress nominations.
There have been 100 nomination slots for Best Actress in the last 20 years, which means black women only received 7% of those spots. Hopefully we’ll see more diversity in the category in the years to come.
In the last 20 years, two black men have won the Best Actor prize and it’s likely that Will Smith will pick up the award this year.
Halle just reflected on her win for Monster’s Ball and said she will “never get over this moment.”
