NSYNC's Joey Fatone admits he was 'blindsided' by Justin Timberlake going solo: 'We thought he was going to come back'

NSYNC's Joey Fatone has admitted he was "blindsided" by Justin Timberlake going solo.

Fatone, 46, spoke about his time in the iconic boyband and how they split after shortly after releasing their hit 2001 album Celebrity, when Justin Timberlake went on to record some solo music and never came back.

"I was not blindsided by the breakup; I was more blindsided as far as him coming out with music and not knowing that he was going to go and do an actual album/tour thing," Fatone said in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.

"It was more of, 'Hey, I'm going to do some music, and then we'll get back together.' That's what that was. And it wasn't him – it was the record company," he explained.

Timberlake released his debut solo studio album Justified in 2002 which produced hits including Like I Love You and Rock Your Body.

Fatone said the band was under the impression that Timberlake, now 42, would return to the group.

"We thought he was just going to go out and just come back after the [Justified] tour," he explained.

Fatone went on to say that he's grateful about the way his life and career panned out, which included Broadway, TV gigs and even acting in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, saying he's "happy with it'"

Just three weeks ago, the boy band thrilled fans as they reunited on stage for the first time in 10 years at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.
