Last Week Tonight with John Oliver writers dedicate Emmys win to Adam Driver

The writers of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver secured an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.

Only a small group of the writing team was permitted at the show, with those in attendance joking, "The show sent the hottest writers."

The "hottest writers," however, mysteriously used their acceptance speech to dedicate their achievement to actor Adam Driver, saying, "He knows what he did, and we know what we'd like him to do."

Driver has been the subject of a running joke during the satirical talk show, where host John Oliver would regularly express his somewhat of an attraction to the Marriage Story star with statements that seemed to grow more explicit with each episode.

"Step on my throat, Adam Driver, you rudely large man," Oliver said in one episode. "Break my fingers, you brooding mountain."

In an episode in March last year, as the coronavirus pandemic spread throughout the United States, Oliver said: "I wouldn't want anyone with the coronavirus serving me my next meal, unless of course that person was Adam Driver.

"Because infecting me with dessert is very much on my running list of things Adam Driver can do to me. Oh, I'm sorry, you thought I'd stopped the Adam Driver bit 'cuz I'm stuck at home now? You were wrong about that. And yes, I know my wife can hear me — that's part of it.

"Sneeze in my McFlurry, you pensive bison. Ravage my lungs, you relentless hillock."

Social media went wild every time an Adam Driver bit was used in one of John Oliver's skits.

Eventually, the joke culminated in a confrontation between the actor and Oliver in the Season 7 finale in mid-November.

As Oliver was asking Driver to crush his larynx, his phone suddenly rang, and Driver himself had called in for a FaceTime session.

"What the f--k are you doing?" Driver jokingly demanded.

"This bit. This thing that you've been doing that's either sexual or violent [...] What's wrong with you? You realise we're strangers, right? I don't know you. And now random people on the internet 'stan' us, claiming that you 'thirsting' over me is a 'mood.' I'm sick of people stopping me on the street and asking me if I'm going to punch a hole in you like a Marriage Story wall!"

After Driver called Oliver "deeply weird, small, small thing," Oliver apologised, concluding that season's gag for the time being.
