J. Harrison Ghee is continuing to make history at the 2023 Tony Awards!
The 33-year-old actor won the award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical on Sunday night (June 11) at the United Palace Theatre in New York City’s Washington Heights.
J. Harrison picked up the award for their performance as Jerry/Daphne in the musical Some Like It Hot. The win made them not only the second-ever openly non-binary performer to win a Tony for acting, but the second of the night!
Earlier in the night, Alex Newell became the first.
Head inside to watch the speech…
“My mother raised me to understand that the gifts God gave me were not about me,” Ghee said while accepting the award. “To use them to be effective in the world. For every trans, nonbinary, gender non-conforming human — whoever was told they couldn’t be, couldn’t be seen, this is for you. ‘Some Like It Hot’ and that ain’t bad.”
Make sure to check out the full list of performers and presenters who will appear during the show and also take a look at the nominees, full of Broadway’s best!
