Elton John admitted he has been thinking about his own mortality during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show alongside musical collaborator Brandi Carlile.
The 77-year-old was discussing recording his new album Who Believes in Angels? when he made the comment.
Norton referenced footage of John recording the album that has been released on social media, and a particular moment when John finishes a song and bursts into tears.

John explained: "Well Bernie Taupin gave me a lyric called 'When this whole world is done with me' and I'm writing the verse quickly and I'm thinking this is a really lovely verse, and I get to the chorus and I realise that it's about my death, my demise.
"As a 76-year-old man, which I was at that time, and having children and having a husband, mortality, you think about it, how long have I got, how I hope I've got much longer than maybe I've got, and so by the time I got to the chorus and I started singing it, I lost it for 45 minutes," he continued.
"It was a very, very heavy moment for me and after 45 minutes of me being consoled I was OK, I recorded it the next day. When you're singing about being washed out to sea and the end of your life, it took me by surprise."

John and Carlile also recently appeared on BBC's The Scott Mills Breakfast Show, where John spoke of the end of his touring career and spending more time with family.
"We knew it was gonna end on a high, but all the performances before Dodgers Stadium were just of that quality and then we came back to England and we did Glastonbury which was unreal and then finished the tour off in Europe," he said.
"The quality of the shows were exactly the same because I was so happy, and when I came off stage in Stockholm after the last show and got in the car, David said, 'How do you feel?' I said, 'I feel so happy.' We went out on the high that I wanted to do."

He then spoke about spending more time with his family, describing it as "wonderful".
"I don't miss playing live at all. I do not miss playing live. Fact. I do not miss it one iota," he said.
"I've done some private shows where I, you know, to keep my chops ready, and that's been great. But no, I don't miss it, I dread it," John continued.

John has spoken about losing his eyesight as well as operations he's undergone, including a knee operation and a hip replacement.
It was while attending the opening night of The Devil Wears Prada in London in December 2024 that he made the comment.

"I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight," he said.
"So it's hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight," he said.
John disclosed in September that an infection had left him "with only limited vision in one eye."
