Houston rapper Big Pokey dies aged 45 after collapsing on stage

Rapper Milton Powell, also known by his stage name, Big Pokey, died after a terrifying fall onstage during a show over the weekend.

The 'Sittin' Sideways' rapper died at age 45 on Saturday after a graphic video posted to Twitter showed him falling backwards while rapping at a show in Beaumont, Texas.

Big Pokey dies after collapsing on stage

Powell's publicist told the local news station, Fox 26, that the rapper fainted while performing at Pour 09 Bar in Beaumont, Texas just after midnight.

Powell was filmed with a microphone in his hand whilst performing at the Juneteenth show when he suddenly collapsed and fell off the stage.

Concert-goers immediately surrounded the rapper whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Big Pokey

The rapper was subsequently rushed to a hospital but he unfortunately passed away soon after. According to reports, Powell's cause of death is still pending awaiting autopsy results. 

The rapper has been hailed as "an integral part of the local scene" and a "pillar of Texas Hip-Hop" was an original member of the collective rap group, Screwed Up Click.

"It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Milton 'Big Pokey' Powell," his publicist told FOX 26.

"Big Pokey passed away on June 18, 2023. He was well-loved by his family, his friends, and his loyal fans."

"In the coming days, we will release information about his celebration of life and how the public can pay their respects."

"We ask that you respect his family and their privacy during this difficult time."

"Big Pokey will forever be 'The Hardest Pit in the Litter.''

Big Pokey

Powell's publicist is referring to the rapper's first full-length record released in 1999.

He began his rap career with Houston producer DJ Screw in the early 1990s and has cemented himself as an integral part of the local music scene ever since.

Powell also appeared in the 2001 film Soldiers United for Cash as well as Dirty Third 2: Home Sweet Home.
