George Clooney returns swipe at Donald Trump after the US President celebrated his French citizenship

George Clooney has responded to Donald Trump after the US President criticised the actor and celebrated his and wife Amal Clooney's recent naturalisation as French citizens.

Reacting to the news that Clooney, Amal and their twins Ella and Alexander were granted French citizenship, Trump shared a post to Truth Social, labelling their new nationality "good news".

"Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden," Trump wrote.

"Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz, Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat," he continued.

"Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn't a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

The Ocean's Eleven actor has since responded to the US President's criticisms in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I totally agree with the current president," Clooney told the publication.

"We have to make America great again. We'll start in November," he added, referring to the midterm elections that will take place in late 2026.

It's not the first time Clooney has been criticised by the US President.

After the Oscar-winning actor published an op-ed for The New York Times in which he urged Joe Biden to step down as the Democratic presidential nominee, Trump called him out in a post on Truth Social.

"So now fake movie actor George Clooney, who never came close to making a great movie, is getting into the act," Trump wrote.

"He's turned on Crooked Joe like the rats they both are," he continued.

But it's criticism that Clooney isn't concerned with.

"I don't care," the Jay Kelly actor told host Gayle King at the time in an appearance on CBS Mornings.

"I've known Donald Trump for a long time. My job is not to please the President of the United States," he continued.

"My job is to try and tell the truth when I can and when I have the opportunity. I am well aware of the idea that people will not like that. … People will criticise that. Elon Musk has weighed in [about me]. That is their right. It's my right to say the other side."

Clooney, his wife and their kids were granted citizenship in a decree published in December 2025.

The French Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Clooneys "maintain strong personal, professional and family ties with our country".
