From a 'cult-like' and 'weird upbringing' in a religious group to three marriages: Glenn Close's rocky love life over the years

Actress Glenn Close is one of Hollywood's greats.

The star, 77, has appeared in a number of iconic films and roles, including 101 Dalmatians, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Damages, and Hook, in a career that has spanned decades.

Despite being nominated eight times for an Academy Award and her many accolades, Close has often made headlines for her personal life over the years – and has been married a total of three times.

And marriage, she concedes, is something that Close "never succeeded" at.

''I'm not looking for anyone. I do have respect for marriage – I think it's a great thing," she told Daily Mail's Weekend Magazine.

"...But I also think the most important thing of all in life is to know yourself and know what brings you joy and to be fulfilled as a human being."

She once reflected on her marriages and life with Glamour, when asked if there was something she "would ever do differently".

"Maybe not get married! Maybe not get married a couple of times! Well, when I look back at things that I say I would've done differently, I didn't have the power to do them differently," she explained after reportedly laughing.

"So you just have to forgive yourself for not having the power."

Glenn Close and Cabot Wade

Close was married to musician Wade from 1969 to 1971. She was only in her early twenties when she first tied the knot.

She recently told Parade that she had a "cult-like" and "weird upbringing" in a religious group and said about the marriage: "I think that was basically an arranged marriage, actually."

She added: "That's a whole other story."

Glenn Close and James Marlas

The actress and grocery heir had a short-lived marriage back in the '80s.

They were married from 1984 to 1987. 

Not too much is known about their relationship, but she told People in the '80s after their split: "Too many women define themselves in terms of a man."

"I think of men and women as two different species. Katharine Hepburn said they should live next door and visit each other once in a while. Not a bad idea."

She went on to welcome her actress daughter Annie Starke with her producer ex John Starke.

Glenn Close and David Evans Shaw

This union lasted nine years.

The couple married in 2006 but their split was reported in 2015 by People.

It was reported that pair had an "amicable" divorce. Shaw is a venture capitalist.

Her rep also told E! News: "The divorce was mutual. She did not divorce him."
