Sanjay Leela Bhansali's blockbuster 2002 hit film, Devdas, completes 19 years since its release today. The film starred actors Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles and earned rave reviews upon its release. At the 48th Filmfare Awards, Devdas received a record 17 nominations, going on to win 11 awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Male) for SRK, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Female) for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Best Supporting Actress for Madhuri Dixit. Kavita Krishnamurthy and Shreya Ghoshal took home the Black Lady for Dola Re Dola. Devdas was also Ghoshal's Bollywood debut and she had sung her first song for the film, Bairi Piya, when she was less than 18 years of age.
Incidentally, at the 4th Filmfare Awards in 1957, the late Dilip Kumar had also won the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of Devdas in the film of the same name. Like in 2003, Devdas led the nominations at the time with four nominations, sharing the honour with Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje. Vyjayanthimala had starred as Chandramukhi while actor Suchitra Sen had made her Bollywood debut as Paro. The 1955 film was directed by Bimal Roy. Moti Lal had also won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as Chunni Babu in the film. Actor Jackie Shroff had reprised the role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas.
