Desperate Housewives writer reveals ugly backstage secrets

An ex-Desperate Housewives writer is lifting the lid on what she claims was the icy environment the crew worked in which was allegedly led by actress Teri Hatcher.

Patty Lin, who was a former writer on the drama, detailed her view of the working conditions in her new book, End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood, which was released on Tuesday, August 29.

"The writers weren't barred from the set, but we weren't exactly welcome. Usually we'd only see the cast at table reads, where we'd sit quietly in the back and try not to make eye contact with Teri Hatcher," Lin wrote in her book, as per Us Weekly.

Lin did not elaborate on the reasoning why the crew felt they could not make eye contact with Hatcher, who portrayed Susan Mayer on the program.

Lin also took aim at the show's creator, Marc Cherry, saying:

"One day at lunch, the topic of Margaret Cho came up, and someone mentioned All-American Girl, Cho's short-lived sitcom about a Korean American family. Marc turned to me and said, 'Patty, you should write a show like that.' I love Margaret Cho, but please don't lump us together just because we're both Asian women in show business," she wrote.

It's claimed Marc Cherry also once called out an unnamed "big star" on the Desperate Housewives set who displayed "big behavioural problems". Cherry allegedly highlighted this in a letter he penned for Felicity Huffman, who was awaiting sentencing for the college admissions scandal at the time.

"Everyone tried their darndest to get along with this woman over the course of the show. It was impossible," he wrote – choosing not to name the star.

"And things went from bad to worse. Felicity still insisted on saying, 'Good morning' to this actress, even though she knew she wouldn't get a response. I found out about this and asked Felicity about it."

Lin also claimed in her book that she was one of several writers on set given "busy work of writing the marginally funny material".

Meanwhile Cherry and his "loyal team" of two other writers lead the creative direction for most of the scripts. Lin recalls a scenario in which another writer was assigned a script, she alleged that Cherry told the other writers they needed to "gang bang" the draft without the knowledge of the original writer.

Neither Cherry nor Hatcher have addressed Lin's allegations in her book.
