'Conformity Gate', explained: Why millions of fans are convinced Stranger Things' final episode is yet to drop

It spanned almost 10 years, five seasons and amassed millions of fans, but Stranger Things, hailed as one of the most-watched Netflix shows of all time, has finally reached its epic conclusion... or has it?

A compelling fan theory has now emerged, sparking debate over what really happens in the show's final episode – and whether it is indeed the final episode at all.

Social media has been abuzz since the movie-length series finale aired on New Year's Eve, with fans frantically scrambling to find an explanation for a number of subtle inconsistencies. Enter: "Conformity Gate."

The theory has been gaining major traction online, suggesting audiences are being encouraged to 'conform' and accept the show's apparent happy ending without questioning it.

Furthermore, it hypothesised it's not just the show's characters under Vecna's control – but us, the viewer, as well.

In one notable season 5 moment, Caleb McLaughlin's character, Lucas, appears to break the fourth wall, staring down the lens as he says "I don't know about you guys, but I don't believe in coincidences."

Millions of disgruntled Stranger Things fanatics have since rejected the finale's fluffed-up ending, believing the real finale episode is yet to be released – not just soon, but tomorrow.

It has been theorised the conclusion of the show we were shown is a complex illusion orchestrated by the hit show's big bad, Vecna, while in reality the entire gang remains trapped under his influence.

While this hypothesis remains unconfirmed by Netflix and Stranger Things' creators, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer, eagle-eyed fans' observations have since served as evidence to back it up.

And with various clues, symbols and imagery all scattered throughout the final season – namely the final episode – there are certain elements that appear rather convincing.

On social media platform X, some have argued the Duffer brothers wouldn't have sold tickets to theatre screenings of the grand finale episode had they had a secret ninth episode up their sleeve.

"I'm sceptical, but if you type in 'fake ending' into Netflix then Stranger Things comes up so now I'm even more confused," one user observed.

Others claim the writer-director duo have consistently cleared up confusion and incorrect theories amongst fans before now – but have remained notably silent on this topic.

Overall, significant importance was placed on various inconsistencies throughout this season.

In Volume 1, the gang discovers Vecna's curse can be exposed by elements of their environment appearing subtly "wrong" or slightly different than remembered.

And the perceived "wrongness" does not have to be glaringly obvious, either.

In episode 2, Holly Wheeler cannily notices that the centre of the merry-go-round in Vecna's fabricated dreamscape is grey, rather than yellow.

And in the same vein, eagle-eyed fans have since pointed out a number of other inconsistencies that could serve to confirm the wild theory.

The dial

A key piece of evidence supplied by Stranger Things sleuths centres around one central prop. The dial both Steve and Robin are seen turning on separate occasions in Volume 2 notably goes from being grey to red in a later shot.

"No bc I'm still tweaking about the dial colours HOW does that happen accidentally." One X user said of the conspicuous colour-change.

"Its not a prop/costume continuity error its an entire set piece changing, that happening 'accidentally' is insane to me."

The books/games

At the show's conclusion, fans are treated to one final scene of the gang embroiled in a dramatic Dungeons and Dragons campaign. As the characters complete their session for the last time, they place their game file folders next to one another on Mike's basement shelf.

With their names visible on the spines, certain letters appear to align, and spelling out "X A LIE."

Fans believe this was an intentional reference to dimension X, one of the in-universe names for The Abyss (the alternate dimension in which Vecna resides).

Therefore, the message "X A LIE" suggests that what transpired in The Abyss (specifically, Vecna's apparent defeat) was a lie or a deception.

Additionally, multiple sets of the iconic '80s game WHATZIT? were visible in several shots, potentially alluding to Vecna's 'Mr. Whatsit' moniker.

The graduation scene

Perhaps the most eerie example of them all, elements of the titular high school graduation scene seemed to appear... off.

The most glaring historical inconsistency (though this could have easily been an oversight on the production design team's part) was the colour of the gang's regalia.

As some fans pointed out, the colour orange was not commonplace in the '80s where graduation robes were concerned.

"But you know who used this colour? PRISONERS." One fan speculated on X.

But this wasn't the only detail that appeared odd. A number of other eagle-eyed fans noticed every single attendee at the ceremony had their hands clasped in their laps – the exact same stance as Vecna.

And if that wasn't unnerving enough, the Wheelers (Nancy, Mike and Mrs Wheeler) were all shown to have cut and styled their hair in Vecna's signature flippy side-part.

But not every fan was convinced by this theory. One Reddit user chastised hopeful fans for their perceived gullibility.

"There is no evidence. Please think critically and stop buying into dumb conspiracies," they urged.

While it's true there remains no official evidence to suggest the finale is misleading Stranger Things viewers, or that a secret episode is yet to be dropped, the theory continues to gain traction online.

Could it turn out to be true? Only time – and the Duffer brothers – will tell.
