Chris Rock reportedly reacted to Will Smith slap with Muhammad Ali joke

Chris Rock found himself on the receiving end of a Will Smith slap after a joke he dished out about the actor's wife was ill-received.

The comedian made a remake at the 2022 Oscars about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair and how he was looking forward to G.I. Jane 2, causing Smith to walk on stage and slap an unsuspecting Rock.

"Keep my wife's name out your f--king mouth. Keep my wife's name out your f--king mouth!" Smith yelled from across the room after sitting back down.

The incident shocked both the audience and viewers alike, but none more so than Rock.

"Will Smith just f--king smacked the s--t out of me," he said on stage as he tried to present the award for Best Documentary Feature.

While Rock appeared rattled on stage, it appears off-stage he still had jokes about Smith.

"When Chris Rock walked back to the wings of the stage with the winners, his cheek was red, but he tried to play it off to the gobsmacked crew and fellow presenters by making a joke about one of Will Smith's other Oscar-nominated roles," Vanity Fair journalist, Anthony Breznican, reported.

Chris Rock reportedly reacted to Will Smith slap with Muhammad Ali joke.

"One witness said he remarked loudly, 'That's the only time you get hit [by] Muhammad Ali and it doesn't leave a scratch.'"

The comedian was of course referring to the time Smith played the legendary boxer in the biopic Ali, which scored him his first-ever Best Actor nomination back in 2002.

Smith's antics also attracted criticism from Hollywood director Judd Apatow.

"He could have killed him. That's pure out of control rage and violence," the Trainwreck director wrote in a silence-deleted tweet.

Apatow pointed out that Smith and Pinkett Smith have been the butt of jokes in the past, so Rock's joke was nothing out of the ordinary.

"They've heard a million jokes about them in the last three decades," Apatow added. "They are not freshman in the world of Hollywood and comedy. He lost his mind."

Judd Apatow weighs in on Will Smith and Chris Rock's altercation at 2022 Oscars.

However, Pinkett Smith's hair is no joking matter to Smith, especially since the actress revealed in 2018 that she suffers from alopecia.

"It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and then just handfuls of hair just in my hands," she said on her Facebook web series Red Table Talk at the time. "It was one of those times in my life that I was literally shaking with fear."
