Celebrity chef Nigella Lawson reveals how losing loved ones way before their time changed her view on life and ageing

Nigella Lawson has opened up about the unbelievable loss of her beloved family members within years of one another.

In an honest interview with New Idea magazine, the 62-year-old celebrity chef said losing her mother and sister way before their time — and within eight years of each other — has caused her to view death in a different way.

"My mother died at 48 and my sister died at 32, so to mind about getting older would be slightly odd," she said of mother Vanessa Salmon who died in 1985 of liver cancer and her sister Thomasina, who died from breast cancer in 1993.

Their deaths impacted Lawson's outlook greatly and are the reasons why she leads a healthy lifestyle while embracing life to its fullest. 

"I'm much more concerned with my health and keeping mobile," she said. "It might sound corny, but if you're well, then that really is the most important thing."

As for ageing, Lawson says "it's just life" and she doesn't give it much thought because "it's going to happen" no there's "no point in focusing on it too much".

Lawson also suffered an unfathomable loss in 2001 when her first husband, journalist John Diamond, passed away following a four-year battle with throat cancer. He was only 47.

Diamond died at the height of Lawson's career. She was filming her cooking show Nigella Bites at the time and only took a two-week break after he died.

"I took a fortnight off. I'm not a great believer in breaks," she said at the time.
