Angelina Jolie's touching confession about double mastectomy scars

Angelina Jolie has opened up about her double mastectomy scars.

The Oscar-winning actress said she didn't mind having a few extra scars on her body because they serve as a reminder of what she chose to do in order to have more time with her kids in this lifetime.

Jolie, 50, received a double mastectomy in 2013 after doctors discovered a gene that increases her risk of breast cancer.

"I've always been someone more interested in the scars and the life that people carry," she said in an interview with French radio station France Inter.

"I'm not drawn to some perfect idea of a life that has no scars."

The actress shares six children with her ex-husband Brad Pitt: Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 19, as well as twins Knox and Vivienne, 17.

She continued, saying she sees the scars as a reminder of "the choice I made to do what I could do to stay here as long as I could with my children".

"I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to have the choice to do something proactive about my health."

"I lost my mom very when I was young. I'm raising my children without a grandmother," she went on.

Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died at the age of 56 in 2007 after an almost 10-year battle with cancer.

"If you get to the end of your life and you haven't made mistakes, you haven't made a mess, you don't have scars, you haven't lived a full enough life."

In December, the actress bravely displayed her scars for the first time while covering TIME France.

"I share these scars with many women I love. And I'm always moved when I see other women share theirs," she told the publication.

"When I shared my experience in 2013, it was to encourage informed choices," she said about women keeping on top of their health.

In the powerful cover photo, the Maria star is wearing a low-cut black top as she stares pensively at the camera, placing her hand over her bare chest.
