Amanda Seyfried Wants Sydney Sweeney to Be in 'Mamma Mia 3'

Amanda Seyfried is dreaming up her ideal cast for Mamma Mia 3 — and her vision includes Sydney Sweeney.

“Sydney Sweeney could show up,” Seyfried, 39, told Entertainment Tonight while attending the 16th Annual Governor Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 16. “There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”

Seyfried and Sweeney, 28, costar in The Housemaid, the upcoming Paul Feig-directed thriller due out in theaters on December 19. The film, based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel of the same name, has already generated a ton of chatter with the release of its dramatic trailer in September.

While Mamma Mia 3 has not been officially announced, Seyfried hinted that the movie is a real possibility. “Maybe I’m just naive, but I’m pretty sure Mamma Mia 3 is a done deal,” the Long Bright River actress told the outlet.

As for what’s next for her iconic Mamma Mia! character, Sophie, Seyfried wants to see her have more children and fully embrace motherhood.

“I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids,” she shared. “Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter.”

Seyfried starred in 2008’s Mamma Mia! and the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, alongside Meryl Streep’s Donna. The films follow Sophie’s quest to find out who her real father is among three of her mom’s former love interests: Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Harry Bright (Colin Firth) and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård). It’s revealed that Donna died in the sequel before revisiting her past.

“I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter,” Seyfried said. “Meryl is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot, and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.”

Though Streep’s character is dead in the Mamma Mia! universe, she previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise in some capacity.

“I’m up for anything,” Streep told Vogue in September 2023. “I’ll have to schedule a knee scoping before we film, but if there’s an idea that excites me, I’m totally there. I told [producer Judy Craymer] if she could figure out a way to reincarnate Donna, I’m into that. Or it could be like in one of those soap operas where Donna comes back and reveals it was really her twin sister that died.”

Streep once again voiced interest in the project the following year.

“I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon,” the Only Murders in the Building actress told Deadline in May 2024.

She added, “Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.”
