Aaron Tveit is officially the winner of a Tony Award after being the sole nominee in his category this year!
The 37-year-old actor won the award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical at the 2020 Tony Awards on Sunday (September 26) at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City.
Aaron won the award for his performance in the musical Moulin Rouge, but he wasn’t guaranteed the award despite being the only nominee. The Tonys state: “If the Tony Awards Nominating Committee has determined that if there is only one nominee in a category listed, such category shall be submitted to the Tony Voters which may, by the affirmative vote of sixty (60%) percent of the total ballots cast, grant an Award in that category.”
During his acceptance speech, Aaron teared up while giving some touching words.
“We are so privileged to get to do this, to be on Broadway, to have a life in the theater,” Aaron said. “Let’s continue to strive to tell the stories that represent the many and not the few, by the many and not the few, for the many and not the few. Because what we do changes people’s lives. It changes people’s minds. It change’s people’s hearts. We can change the world with this. Let’s not forget that. This means more to me than I can ever say.”
Aaron was joined at the show by his longtime girlfriend Ericka Hunter, who also is in the Moulin Rouge cast.
